Nexi was composed in Northern Ireland – at the farm house sitting at the dining table during the summer of 1993. The piece is dedicated to my dear friends, Päivikki Nykter and János Négyesy, and they premiered it later that year (if I recall correctly) at UCSD. One of my biggest regrets was that I was not able to be at the premiere. The work has not been performed since, and it is a really amazing thing that it will be presented in NYC by TAK more than 20 years later!! I guess life is like that sometimes.
Nexi was awarded in the Irino Prize for Chamber Music (Japan) shortly after its premiere and the live recording is part of the album Music for Strings. Another regret is that JN and PN never made a definitive studio recording of the piece – that would have been AMAZING! The work can be heard online at all the digital streaming and download sites. Below is a link to the Bandcamp page for the Music for Strings CD. The recording can also be found at iTunes and Amazon.com.
Program note:
NEXI for violin and viola (1993) – This work explores the notions of connection and linkage, both between the two instruments and also within the definition of musical materials and their structured development. Written as a musical celebratory gesture for Päivikki Nykter and János Négyesy, Nexi is concerned with the focal aspects of the duo condition – cooperation, dualistic assimilation, reflexive commentary and mutual support. Nexi is organized into eleven discrete sections but is largely continuous in sound. At the heart of the compositional process lies the utilization of what I refer to as “compositional primitives,” computer programs designed to provide a meaningful technology for the control of the development of musical sound-space. These “primitives” remain equally useful regardless of the context in which they are used and have been applied to a number of works. Musical stochastics are also employed in the development of a syntactical pitch hierarchy.
